Our priority areas

At the heart of the public health challenges of today and tomorrow

Health remains a major challenge for society, and medical research is having to face up to new challenges that are emerging all over the world: the increase in environmentally-related diseases, the ageing of the population, the issue of dependency, and so on.

In response to these new challenges, the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale has decided to increase the impact of its support for research by identifying four priority areas of funding.

Acting on neurodegeneration

Our objectives:

  • Boost research to understand the causes and mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases
  • To encourage research aimed at developing innovative medical practices
  • Promote interdisciplinary scientific approaches to these diseases.

Diseases covered by this area: Alzheimer's disease - Parkinson's disease - amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Charcot's disease - hereditary cerebellar ataxias, etc.

Preventing the effects of the environment on health

Our objectives:

  • To gain a better understanding of the effects of environmental factors on our health.
  • To provide public authorities with the keys to promoting an appropriate prevention policy.
  • To inform the general public about the harmful effects of environmental factors on our health.

Diseases covered by this area: Women's health - Respiratory diseases and allergies - Cerebral development disorders - Neurological diseases and mental health disorders - Infertility and reproductive disorders, etc.

Repairing the human body

Our objectives:

  • Stimulate innovation by bringing together scientific and medical disciplines
  • To support the funded research teams, so that they can make the most of their advances
  • Select and support research projects with a direct benefit for patients

Areas covered by this area: Repairing the heart after a heart attack - Restoring vision - Regenerating ageing intervertebral discs - Repairing the brain damaged by head trauma, etc.

Accelerating research into Covid-19 and emerging viruses

Our objectives:

  • Respond to the urgency and threat of emerging viruses.
  • Pursue our commitment by funding the most promising research projects onto long Covid .
