According to its statutes, the FRM has the possibility to act as an umbrella organization, sponsoring other organizations under its aegis, designated as sheltered foundations under French law. These other organizations must be dedicated to supporting medical research.
They are created:
- on the initiative of individuals, in memory of a loved one, to continue the work of a professional life, as part of a familys plan for charitable giving. These are philanthropic foundations.
- by researchers, nonprofits and other associations, who find lack of resources in one or more areas of research. These are research foundations.
Regarding their form, duration, financing methods, governance and so on, the scope of possibilities is vast.
